Witch hazel is an extract from the bark and leaves of *Hamamelis virginiana*. People apply it to the skin as a quick-drying astringent.
You can dab it on minor bug bites, razor burn, or light sunburn for temporary relief. Manufacturers also add it to pads and creams meant for hemorrhoid discomfort.
Do not take witch hazel by mouth; internal use can upset the stomach severely. Sensitive skin might react with irritation or an allergic rash, so test a small area first.
