Wheatgrass is the young shoot of the common wheat plant (Triticum aestivum), cut before the grain forms. The juice and powder deliver chlorophyll, vitamins, and antioxidants.

People take it for an energy lift and to help with digestion. Many drink a morning shot straight or blend the powder into a smoothie.

Typical servings are small. A shot of fresh juice measures about 1 to 2 fluid ounces. Powdered wheatgrass usually lands in the 3 to 5 gram range, mixed into water or another drink.

The grass itself contains no gluten, but cross-contamination can happen during growing or packing. Anyone with celiac disease should stick with certified gluten-free products. Wheatgrass supplies vitamin K, which might interfere with warfarin and similar blood thinners. Safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been established.
