Psyllium husk is the outer coating of the Plantago ovata seed. It packs concentrated soluble fiber and mixes into liquid more easily than whole seeds. When you stir it into water, the powder forms a thick gel.
Stir a dose into water, juice, or a smoothie and drink it right away. The gel draws water into the stool, softening it and adding bulk. With regular use, people also take it to help maintain cholesterol and blood sugar levels that are already in the healthy range. Results vary from person to person.
Drink at least 8 ounces of liquid with every dose. Too little fluid can cause throat or intestinal blockage. Separate psyllium from medications and other supplements by at least 2 hours so it does not reduce their absorption.
