Myrrh is a resin from Commiphora trees. People have used it in traditional medicine and religious rites for thousands of years. Applied to the mouth, it helps maintain oral hygiene and soothes minor skin irritations. Taken internally, it supports digestive health and immune function. You can find it as an extract, tincture, or powder. Many mouthwashes and toothpastes also contain myrrh.
People typically use myrrh for short periods. Myrrh may slow blood clotting. Stop using it at least two weeks before surgery and avoid combining it with anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications. Do not use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
