Mineral oil coats the intestines and softens stool so it passes more easily. It comes from petroleum and has no color or smell. People take it by mouth at bedtime for short-term constipation.
Do not give this to children, older adults, or anyone who has trouble swallowing. Accidentally breathing it into the lungs can cause serious harm. Long-term use blocks the uptake of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), so keep doses away from meals. Avoid pairing it with other laxatives or stool softeners.
