Insect wax is a natural waxy substance secreted by the male Chinese wax scale insect (Ericerus pela). It is composed mainly of esters and fatty acids.
In traditional use it occasionally shows up as a coating or excipient in herbal pills, or as a topical ingredient in ointments and cosmetics for its protective, water repellant properties. No strong mainstream evidence supports internal medicinal benefits in modern supplementation.
People take it strictly as a minor component of a finished product (like a coated pill). No standard oral supplementation exists.
Swallowing large amounts could cause gastrointestinal upset. Do not apply it to broken skin. Reliable safety data for pregnancy and nursing is lacking.
