DGL is deglycyrrhizinated licorice root. Manufacturers remove glycyrrhizin, the substance that can raise blood pressure and lower potassium. Taking it out makes DGL a safer choice for regular use than standard licorice.
People use DGL to calm occasional stomach and throat irritation and to coat and protect mucosal tissue. Chewable tablets, lozenges, and powders work best. Mix it with saliva and take it 15 to 30 minutes before eating. Do not swallow it whole with water.
DGL affects blood pressure far less than whole licorice root. Still, it may interfere with certain drugs.
