DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) is a precursor to choline, which the body converts into acetylcholine. People take it aiming for better focus and mental clarity, but the evidence backing it is sparse and largely from older studies.
The supplement typically comes as DMAE bitartrate. A common dose is once or twice daily, and taking it in the morning helps prevent sleep disruption.
Side effects often include insomnia, muscle tension, and headaches. People with bipolar disorder or seizure disorders should avoid it, as it may worsen symptoms. Its safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding is unknown.
