Cnidium monnieri, also called Snowparsley, is a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine. Its fruit extract contains osthole, the compound believed responsible for most of its effects.
People take cnidium orally to support sexual health and libido. They also apply it to the skin for itching and eczema. Early research hints that osthole might help bone density and cognitive function, though these uses are not yet mainstream.
Supplements come as powdered extract, liquid extract, or dried fruit. Oral doses typically range from 50 to 300 mg of a standardized extract. You can take it with or without food, but a meal often prevents stomach upset.
Pregnant women should avoid cnidium because it may stimulate uterine contractions. Topical use can increase sun sensitivity, so apply sunscreen on treated areas.
