Cascara sagrada powder comes from the bark of the Rhamnus purshiana tree. The bark contains anthraquinones that stimulate the colon to encourage a bowel movement.
People use the powder for occasional constipation. They brew it as tea, fill it into capsules, or stir it into a liquid. Taking it at bedtime typically produces a bowel movement the next morning.
Do not use cascara sagrada for more than one week. Longer use can cause laxative dependence, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances. Avoid this powder if you have an intestinal blockage, Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis. Pregnant or nursing individuals should not take it.
