Burdock extract comes from the root of Arctium lappa, often standardized to bitter compounds like arctigenin. Compared to whole root or tea, it provides more active compounds in a smaller dose.
People mainly use burdock extract to promote skin health and a healthy inflammatory response. Herbal blends often include it for occasional blemishes or as part of a general cleansing protocol.
Take the extract in capsule or liquid form with a meal to aid absorption. Many people cycle it: 4 to 6 weeks on, then 1 to 2 weeks off, often for a seasonal cleanse.
Burdock can slow blood clotting, so steer clear of it with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. It may also alter blood sugar. Do not use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and stop at least two weeks before surgery.
