Buchu leaves come from the *Agathosma betulina* or *Agathosma crenulata* shrubs native to South Africa. Herbalists have used them for generations to promote urinary tract health and aid mild digestion. The leaves give off a sharp, mint-like aroma and work as a gentle diuretic.
People typically drink a tea made from the dried leaves or swallow a concentrated extract capsule (such as a 4:1 extract) with water. A dose is taken once or twice a day. Since the diuretic effect increases urine output, many prefer earlier doses to avoid nighttime bathroom trips.
Buchu’s diuretic action may interfere with prescription water pills or lithium. Approach it with caution if you have kidney conditions. Avoid it altogether during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Always check with your doctor before adding a new herb.
