Beet extract packs nitrate-rich beetroot into a concentrated supplement. The body converts those nitrates into nitric oxide, a molecule that widens blood vessels and improves oxygen delivery. Many standardize for nitrates or, less often, for betalains.
Athletes take it 60 to 90 minutes before a workout to sharpen endurance and power output. Others use it daily to help maintain already-healthy blood pressure.
Watch for beeturia, a harmless red tint in urine or stool. The extract contains oxalates, so skip it if you have a history of kidney stones. Since it naturally relaxes blood vessels, anyone on blood-pressure medication should check with their doctor first.
